There has been discussion about the origins of what we now call ‘the mind’ at least since the earliest writers in ancient Greece. Later philosophers like Descartes, although clear that the mind and brain are made from different ‘materials’, but that the mind has its origin in nature, did not deny the prevalent faith in a coexisting supernatural soul.
